Our final sewing day today was full of finishing up.  We have worked really hard to complete our projects and while some of us haven't quite finished we know we can use our discovery learning time to work on these more.

Week 9

Some of us are still working on our stitch samplers - Well done to everyone on showing their perseverance this week - Sam I am really proud of you, you are so focused and really taking care of your work.

Others of us are getting tricky and have started to make a cross stitched patterned scent bag - (I wonder who the lucky ones will be who get this for Christmas!?!)

The cross stitch work requires a lot of concentration to keep it need and tidy

Mrs Hanlon brought in an example of her own needle work that she did when she was in year 5 at primary school ( It was called standard 3 in those olden days)

We are all going to make our our too.  We are using hessian for our fabric and embroidery cotton.  We are learning a  number of different stitches.

Ongoing Effort

  The best thing about our fabric group is that some of us has been able to continue on with our work on Friday discovery learning.  In the boxes of stuff that Mrs Hanlon had brought in from home was some embroidery threads and bits of cross stitch.  There are also some other students who are keen to join in, who are not in our fabric group.  The first Friday that Mrs Hanlon showed us what to do we spent the whole day with our heads down, concentrating on our work.  



We are making counted cross stitch scent pouches as keepsakes for ourselves or to give to someone special.

It began to become very obvious that making a dress was a bit commitment that would require a lot of resources and one adult and one sewing machines was going to make it all a very slow and maybe frustrating process.  Mrs Hanlon only has one set of hands!

Mrs Hanlon had also noticed that many of us didn't have any of the basic skills like threading a needle and making stitches.  She can remember spending a lot of time learning these with her grandmother when she was the same age as some of us.  So ... she thought that maybe we should start with some of these skills, she had some bright colourful fabric which we cut rounds out of  and showed us how to sew around the edge ready to gather the top. 

When we were about to do this we then pulled it tight and stuffed the round with pillow filling.  Then we made shapes out of felt and stitched these onto the top to cover the gathering

We were very proud of our work, especially those of us who had found this challenging.

Welcome to our sewing group

Our first week was all about getting organised.  Thinking about what we might make, what resources we had, and what we would need to find or buy.

Some of us really want to make something that we could wear to the disco later this term.  So we spent the afternoon searching for ideas and talking about what we would need.

In this group there are so many different levels of students, from year 1 to year 8 - this means that we have to consider our different abilities and how much help we may or may not need.

Our next session was beginning to make the things we had decided on.  We had some people learning to knit, some people beginning to make their dresses and some who still didn't know what they wanted to do - or didn't have the things that they needed with them.
We were beginning to realise how important it is to plan ahead and get ourselves organised.
